About this Document

This is an informal report on Cytoscape usability studies, conducted in cooperation with biologists of varying levels of Cytoscape expertise.

Background

Over the past months, we (Melissa, Benno, Olivier Garcia, and Catherine Letondal) have studied biologists at the Pasteur Institute in their usage of Cytoscape. The goal of these interviews was to collect observations on where users face obstacles in Cytoscape usage, and how they have potentially overcome those obstacles. There were eight interviews conducted, with nine Cytoscape users.

The interviews were conducted in the user's workspace. They were open in style, but were driven by the user's specific data analysis tasks. Most interviews began with an overview of the user's data, and followed a flow according to the subsequent data analysis tasks that they would like to perform. The users were videotaped as they ran Cytoscape or explored Cytoscape functionality, and detailed interview transcripts were written after each interview. Out of respect for the users' privacy, these transcripts are not available to the public, but summary information will be presented here.
